I love Halloween! Its one of my absolute favourite days of the year, and NO its not because of the candy. Growing up in the UK we didn’t celebrate this day very much, we celebrated another day, Guy Fawkes Day just as vigorously. The Guy Fawkes night is sort of similar to Halloween except it involved burning a life size figure of Guy Fawkes on a bonfire, yikes!
So back to Halloween, why do I love this tradition so much? I absolutely love decorating my house, I love to see my two children dressed up in their favourite costumes, I love the neighbourhood feel as we go to each house and get a chance to say Hi to each one, I love to see the faces on the children as they get scared by costumes or a fabulously decorated house, I love to gasp at the decorations and scare myself with coffins that open or when a neighbour jumps out at you and makes you scream.
Its all so much fun to me. But, and here’s the but, we don’t eat the candy! Shocker I know! We prefer to do a “Switch Witch” and switch out the candy for something fun that the boys will enjoy playing with. We take part in the Teal Pumpkin Project and offer candy alternatives too such as stickers, stamps, colouring books etc. Why would I “deprive” my children of their stash you might ask? Well its very simple, I don’t want them having all the “crap” and yes I did say crap that is inside each and everyone of those enticingly bright and dazzling packages. Its just not food, its not good for you, your body, teeth and its just plain old crap! Now I know that will hurt some peoples feelings but this is our way of life and we don’t indulge in candy. We wont make you feel uncomfortable if you eat it, we wont judge you or make you feel like you are doing something wrong, if you enjoy it then do it. We don’t enjoy it, so we don’t eat it, its as simple as that.
I refuse to lecture people on the consequences of eating candy on Halloween however, you are all in charge of your body and if you choose to eat candy you need to own that and be ok with it. Now I could go on to tell you what you will “actually” be getting from eating said candy but I think on this night of the year it would be a mute point, so Ill save it for another day.
So have a Happy Halloween from Thor, Son Of Thor and Giraffe, and if you indulge then own it and don’t let anyone make you feel guilty – we do that pretty much every day as it is so give yourself the night off.
