Its Christmas Party season, or as I like to call it, eat and drink things you never usually do in quantities you never usually do. We can sometimes feel pressure to indulge during Christmas by others and by ourselves. But it doesn’t need to be all guilt and excess calories. Here’s how to survive the office Christmas party in style with a few helpful tips.
Planning is the key for the festive season. If you plan ahead you will be able to enjoy all the festivities to their fullest and still feel amazing! For example if you are going out to a cocktail party or a party that is more finger food than a sit down meal, you can prepare yourself ahead of time to really enjoy the whole evening and not think about what you could eat.
Have a small meal before you leave, nothing too big but one that has lots of healthy fats in order to satiate your hunger and leave you feeling satisfied but not overly full. For example eggs with avocado, perhaps some steel cut oats with fresh fruit and maca or sprouted grain toast with almond butter. This way you wont arrive at the party and immediately start circling the pastries and chips.
If you do nibble try to opt for the heathier versions, there is usually a fruit or vegetable platter available (which always looks better at the beginning of the evening) – but I cant stress this enough – the most important thing is to not feel guilty! parties are meant to be enjoyed and if you spend all your time worrying about what you can and can’t eat or what you just ate that wasn’t the healthiest then you wont enjoy the party and you might end up feeling miserable.
With alcohol its best to stay clear or mixers as that is usually where the sugar lies. Opt for a glass of wine or if you drink hard liquor have it neat or with ice. One great way to drink healthier is to have a glass of water between alcoholic drinks, this will hydrate you and also limit the amount of alcohol you consume.
Even if you indulge in some things that are not the most nutritious you can always make up for it the next day. Wake up to a glass of tepid water with freshly squeezed lemon for a morning cleanse, prepare some nutrient dense bone broth for your breakfast, eat light in the morning with fruit and let your body detox after the night before.
