Human being versus human doing. Which one describes you better? I know I am more of a human doing, but I am working on “being” more by using Mind Calm Meditation and being mindful over over scheduling. As a society we have come to believe that being busy, always doing something, constantly in a state of panic is normal, its accepted, and in some places even praised. Being busy, “doing” lots of things is seen as being productive, worthy, important.
When I was a child growing up in England it wasn’t this way, I remember times when I would stare out of the window for what seemed like hours, imagining, creating, wishing, it seemed like such a magical time. I would love to read, and play using my imagination. I watch my own children now and wonder how they do it, live in this world of never ending entertainment. They find it hard to entertain themselves without myself or my husband helping or making suggestions, they rarely use their powers of imagination and wonder (this is partly due to the fact that my husband and I probably over compensated for our childhoods).
As adults we are usually seen as lazy, unproductive, unimaginative if we take time to just be! When was the last time you just sat and did nothing? Or didn’t have a million thoughts running through your head of things you had to do, places you had to be, laundry you needed to fold or dinners you had to prepare.
How about we take this time back for ourselves? Start a revolution of simply being? Take time each and every day to be present, to take in the world around us, notice the little things, notice how we feel in that present moment, notice how calm, joyful, happy and content we can be in that moment. Lets take a stand towards all those who are constantly “busy” and remind ourselves that this is not a badge of honour, that to be busy is not necessarily to be productive or efficient. If we simply took the time to stand still for a few moments we just might see that we’ve been spinning our wheels for just too long, pretending to get things done, to be effective and finish tasks when really all we have been doing is shuffling those papers around our desk, putting off the important things like being present and enjoying this very moment, right here, right now, this moment that will never come again!
Lets take a stand and unite in taking back our lives, to not being a slave to busyness, to saying no to taking on too much and take time to be with ourselves, to get to know ourselves again. We are amazing creatures if we would only spend more time with ourselves without distractions. Lets put away the things that stunt our creativity, that dull our joys and that rob us of time spent with the things that matter. Lets take our loved ones in our arms and feel what its like to be in that moment, that very perfect moment, the moment that makes memories and creates bonds.
Lets take back being….
Are you a human being or a human doing right now? Do you do things that bring you into the present moment? If not, do you think you could? I would love to know, please take a moment to write in the comments below your thoughts, in this very moment.
