I am exhausted! You know the type of exhaustion you feel when its mental and not physical? But I did it to myself, or I should say that my husband and I did it to ourselves. We thought it would be a good idea to move, no reason in particular, just a whim, but it snow balled and one week later we bought a new house in a different city! Now we have enviable task of preparing our house for sale!
Preparing a house to sell is not for the faint of heart. Its so much more than we expect it to be isn’t it? Once you start at one end of the house you end up in a million different directions as you get sidetracked by all the little things that need doing, as well as the big things.
My husband and I decided to divide and conquer. I would tackle most of the inside of the house and he would do the gardens. Unfortunately for me, I am a type A personality, which can be a huge asset at times, but not during these times. After all, no-one looks at your house the way you do, you see all the little things, the finger smudges, the chips on the floor, the uneven pillows for crying out loud! No-one lives this way and I, “we”, expect to have these unbelievable expectations of how a house should be presented when we sell it.
We know that a lot of strangers will be coming through our door so we make it pristine and “un-lived in” for the most part. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE the way my house looks when we have it ready for the photos or for a showing, it looks like a house I could live in every day and not feel stressed about clutter or crumbs. If only it would stay that way!
Our children are 9 and 7 so there are always too many toys, pieces of lego scattered about on their floor or clothes that almost made it into the laundry basket. But thats home right? Its those little things that make it lived in, loved and cared for. Those things mean that you spend more time being with each other, or having fun or just not caring if the bed sheets are straight.
So I’ve decided to dial it down a notch and relax a little more. I won’t be getting out the toothbrush to scrub the baseboards, I mean who does that! I am Type A but that is insane. My house will be tidy, clean and ready to go when its needed, without the added stress of having to be perfect.
Lets just hope theres that special person/family out there that loves our house just as much as we do.
