I do this over 1400 times a day and it still might not be enough! What am I talking about? Well I’m talking about something that is so important that it could be the key to your health and wellness journey. Something that is essential for EVERY DAY. Something some people do without thinking, most people don’t do enough and some do the bare minimum.
I’m talking about CHEWING! Yes, something as simple as chewing your food can be the start of a new health and wellness journey for most of us. Interesting fact – our stomach’s do not have teeth! really its true, whatever goes into our mouths, if its not chewed enough may end up not being digested properly, being turned into debris and cause an inflammatory response in the body.
Chewing is the cornerstone of good digestion, a healthy digestive tract and a healthy mind but it is often overlooked. How often do you actually take the time to sit down to a meal, with no distractions, no t.v, no phone, and take an hour, or even half an hour, to enjoy whats on your plate? Probably not very often I’m guessing.
It takes 20 minutes for our stomachs to feel full – 20 minutes! thats sometimes the amount of time we take to sit down and eat a whole meal and not give it a second thought. Hence why we tend to overeat – feel bloated – have gas – belch – feel like we want to go to sleep or feel so uncomfortable we have to unbutton our pants!
So here is my challenge to you! For the next 24 hours, at each meal take time to chew each and every mouthful AT LEAST 20 times before swallowing. You will be amazed how much better you feel, how much flavour you find in your food and how your digestion will react, how your digestive juices will flow and you wont even need to drink water while you eat! your saliva will be enough.
Let me know how you do. I would love to know how it makes you feel, if you see any changes, if you notice less bloating or gas. Take the time to sit with your family, or sit in a quiet spot and simply enjoy your food by giving it the time it needs to develop in your mouth. Savour the textures and tastes, enjoy the time you take out of your day to eat, and yes! soup needs to be chewed too, strange but true.
I can’t wait to see how you do….
