Thats right, I was told I was old at 37, or to put it exactly “Advanced Maternal Age”. I was shocked when I heard this, my first thoughts were “are they talking about me?, they can’t be talking about me, I am not old!”
But apparently after the age of 35 thats exactly what you are considered – old – well to have a baby that is! I was pregnant with my first child when I was 36 and I gave birth to my beautiful baby boy when I was 37, yep thats right the grand old age of 37.
I can tell you that I didn’t feel old at the time of conception, I felt like my life was just beginning, I was loving being independent, being able to eat whatever I wanted and drink whatever I wanted, life was good. But as soon as I discovered I was pregnant panic and fear took over! I had not been taking care of myself the way I should have been by any means. I was healthy and worked out but I ate fast food, I liked wine and cocktails, I ate sushi! Then I was (very strongly) advised that I should have an amniocentesis (amnio) due to my age to rule out any possible defects etc. That sacred the crap out of me!!
So not only was I “old” and eating a crappy diet I also had to go through a procedure that could potentially lead to a miscarriage – talk about stress!! I don’t think I have ever felt that kind of stress before in my entire life. Luckily everything went well and my first born is now 9 years old and thriving.
But, this is not the case with a lot of women. At the age of 37, and indeed as soon as you start entering into your thirties, it starts getting increasingly more difficult to get pregnant, or keep a pregnancy to term and a lot depends on your nutritional status when you conceive. If you have been careful and have led a healthy lifestyle, been vigilant and taken any necessary supplements to ensure your nutritional needs are met, then you stand a good chance of having a healthy, happy baby and pregnancy. But, if you have nutritional deficiencies and haven’t always led the healthiest lifestyle there is still time to rectify this.
