We’ve been taught to value independence, it’s become a sign of being an adult, being able to do it all, being “in control” of your life.
Sadly, being independent for some, means being lonely or isolated. By shining your badge of independence and using it to blind anyone who asks if we need any help we may be pushing away valuable and meaningful relationships with others and in particular ourselves.
I admit, I used to think of independence and not asking for help as a sign of strength, being a woman even more so it speaks to “I can do just fine on my own thank you very much”
But that led me down a dark path of being resentful and feeling taken advantage of. When you keep saying “no thank you” for any help that is offered, that help eventually goes away and doesn’t come back.
So, how about we reframe “asking for help” how about we now think of it as a sign of strength, which I like to do. I now think of “being able to do it all, all by myself” as a sign of weakness on my part because I LOVE human interaction. I love the people you meet and the opportunities that come from asking for help.
I recently moved house and there is no way on earth I could have managed if I didn’t ask for help from friends, and I wasn’t afraid to ask either. I was grateful that I didn’t have dialogue in my head going round and round saying “don’t impose, they will already be busy, you’re putting them in an awkward position”.
The move went off without a hitch and I got to spend time with the people I love and be extremely grateful that I can call these amazing people friends.
So, let’s rename it co-creation. Let’s co-create this beautiful life together. Let’s collaborate and chat and help each other out and use that as our badge of honour.
By asking for help you’re giving that person/people the opportunity to do what they would do in a heartbeat, but most of the time we don’t give them the opportunity to do.
You can be still be independent of course but let’s do it in co-creation and with collaboration.
Could you, or do you know someone who is fiercely independent who could really use help/your help? Why not reach out to them and share this blog post with them, help them to co-create a beautiful life.
