Is a lack of sweetness ruining your weight loss efforts?
Perhaps you’re enjoying a relaxing Friday or Saturday night at home. You’ve chosen your favourite movie, you’re in your pj’s, and you’re ready to go…
Then your mind starts to wonder, “I think I need something sweet” you say to yourself, or you don’t quite know what happened but you find yourself in the pantry searching the shelves for something…
So, you pour yourself a nice glass of wine, it is Friday night after all and you deserve it…
Then you find the kids cookies in the pantry or a family bag of chips (that you swore you would never eat again just last week), and you end up polishing off the whole bag.
Does this sound all too familiar?
It’s almost like you’re in a dream state, you find yourself on the sofa with a drink in your hand and a row of half-eaten cookies beside you. You can’t quite recall the last 30 mins but you know you kind of watched the movie and your feeling uplifted – but there’s now a tinge of something else…
A tinge of guilt, a feeling of “oh no! I just blew my great week, now I’ve put all the weight back on that I worked so hard to lose” and you start to spiral down from there.
Then it becomes a free for all, you go in search of anything that will satisfy the cravings, after all, your week is already blown so you might as well go all out.
This happens way more times than you would think. We have a tendency to throw the baby out with the bathwater when we are trying our best to lose a few (or a lot of) pounds.
So what can you do about it, before it hits?
- Recognise that you are missing sweetness in your life, not food wise but soul wise or physically wise.
- Find ways to fill yourself up BEFORE the need to supplement with food takes over.
- Indulge in things that fill you up, that gives you pleasure, that make you smile and feel good.
- Keep doing these things – consistently, so that any possible cravings you might have had before won’t surface as much.
In order to not derail any weight loss goals, think of ways to bring sweetness into your life that don’t have calories. Fill up your sweetness cup before it gets to the pantry or fridge stage. Look for new and inventive ways to bring or GIVE sweetness in your life.
If you don’t have that special person, perhaps you could be that special person for someone else. Spend time giving to others, time with friends, time volunteering, long hot baths, walks with a friend, a lovely lunch out with someone you admire.
When we focus on how we can give and accept sweetness in our lives it takes the focus off feeling we need to fill it other things that derail us and could potentially harm us.
Do you accept sweetness into your life?
Do you know what sweetness feels like?
Do you give sweetness to others?
Let us know in the comments your thoughts on this subject, we would love to know.
